Official RSA tester procedure (SOP 2025)

What happens on the day of your walkaround test

1. Before you walk out to the vehicle

You must wear a high-visibility vest or jacket. The truck or bus must display valid insurance and CVRT discs. On a combined test (walkaround + driving) the 30-minute oral walkaround comes first at the vehicle, then a 10-minute break, then the 90-minute drive.

2. The #1 trap: question 2C (GVW plate)

Every candidate gets question 2C ("Show me the GVW plate and state the design gross vehicle weight"). Before the tester comes out, find the plate on the door pillar, step well or front grille of the vehicle you hired and memorise its exact GVW in kilograms.

3. How the tester marks the tablet sheet

The tester asks 4 questions per section (20 in total). You do not need textbook English: naming 3 to 4 sensible points from the sheet earns a green (Grade 1) mark and 5/5. Never tilt the cab during checks.

4. Dual pass mark: 15/20 and 80/100

Each of the 5 sections is worth 20 points. You need at least 15/20 in every single section and at least 80/100 overall. 20/20 in four sections but 10/20 in Section 3 is still a fail.

CPC Walkaround Test Ireland: Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are asked on the Irish CPC Walkaround test?

The RSA examiner asks 20 questions in total: 4 questions from each of the 5 official Subject Areas, including at least 1 mandatory "Show Me / Demonstrate" question per section.

What is the pass mark for the Driver CPC Step 4 Walkaround test?

Each question is worth 5 marks (20 marks per section, 100 marks in total). To pass, you must score at least 15 out of 20 in every single section AND at least 80 out of 100 overall.

How many points do I need to name for each Walkaround question?

On the examiner’s marking sheet, each question has 4 to 9 bullet points plus "Other". Naming 3 to 4 accurate points (and physically pointing to the part on "Show Me" questions) earns the full 5 out of 5 Green (Grade 1) mark.

Do I need to wear a Hi-Viz vest for the CPC Walkaround test?

Yes. Under RSA Standard Operating Procedures, both the candidate and the examiner must wear high-visibility clothing (PPE) during the walkaround test at the vehicle.
