Road signs in Ireland
All 141 signs and road markings that the Irish driver theory test asks about, with the official meaning for each one. Grouped by type, because the shape and colour tell you what kind of sign it is before you even read the picture.
Test yourself first
Guess the meaning, then check. It sticks far better than reading a list top to bottom.

Read the shape, not the picture
You will meet signs on the road that were not in your revision. The shape and colour still tell you what to do.
- Yellow diamond
- A hazard ahead. Slow down and look for what the picture is warning you about.
- Orange diamond
- Roadworks. Same idea as the yellow ones, but temporary, so the layout may not match your map.
- Red circle or ring
- A prohibition. Something is not allowed: no entry, no overtaking, a speed limit.
- Blue circle
- A positive instruction. You must do what the arrow shows.
- Blue or white rectangle
- Information: bus lanes, cycle tracks, taxi ranks, motorway exits.
Two Irish quirks worth knowing
Speed limits in the Republic are in km/h and the sign says so under the number. Cross into Northern Ireland and the same-looking sign means mph, so a “50” is suddenly 80 km/h.
Place-name signs are bilingual: Irish on top in italics, English below in capitals. Some rural signs give the Irish name only, so it is worth knowing the Irish for wherever you are heading.
