How Long Does the Theory Test Take in Ireland?

Updated 31 August 2026 · 4 min read

The car test allows 45 minutes for 40 questions. Almost nobody uses all of it. Prepared candidates are done in 20 to 30 minutes, and the time limit is not what fails people.

The visit itself is longer than the test. Budget an hour and a quarter at the centre, because you are asked to arrive 30 minutes early and there is a tutorial before the clock starts.

How the appointment actually runs

  1. Arrive 30 minutes before your slot with valid photo ID. No ID means no test and no refund.
  2. Check in and store your phone and belongings in a locker.
  3. A short on-screen tutorial shows you how to answer, flag and review. This is not timed against you.
  4. The test itself, on the clock. A timer sits on screen throughout.
  5. Finish and the result appears immediately. You collect the printed statement on the way out.
Finishing early is not rewarded and running out of time is rare. If you are still on question 20 at the halfway mark, flag the ones you are unsure of, answer everything, then go back to the flagged ones. There is no negative marking, so a blank answer is strictly worse than a guess.

The truck and bus tests are the long ones

A hundred questions in two hours is genuinely tiring, and concentration dips somewhere around question 70. The combined CD test at 140 questions over three hours is harder for that reason alone rather than because the questions themselves are harder.

If you are sitting CD, practise in long stretches at least once. Doing twenty questions at a time all week does not prepare you for hour three.

When you get the result

Straight away. The screen tells you whether you passed and you take the printed statement with you. There is no waiting period and no result posted out later. If you passed, the next step is applying for your learner permit, and that certificate is valid for two years.

Can you leave early?

Yes. Submit the test when you are finished and you can go. Do use a few of the spare minutes to review flagged questions first, though. The second look catches more mistakes than people expect, and there is no prize for being out the door quickest.

Practise against the real clock

The free mock exam uses the official format and timing: 40 questions, 45 minutes, pass mark 35.
