How Long Is the Theory Test Valid in Ireland? 2 Years
Updated 24 September 2026 · 4 min read
Two years from the day you pass. That is the short answer, and it is the same for car, motorcycle, truck and bus. What trips people up is what the two years is counting down to, because it is not your driving test.
The clock runs until you apply for a learner permit
The certificate exists to get you a first learner permit in that category. Use it within two years and it has done its job. Once the permit is issued, the certificate no longer matters and it can expire without affecting anything.
So the deadline is the permit application, not the driving test. If you pass the theory test in March 2026, apply for the permit in April 2026 and then take three years learning to drive, you are fine. Nobody asks for the certificate again.
What happens when it expires
Nothing dramatic, and there is no grace period. If you never applied for a permit, the certificate simply stops counting and you book and pay for the theory test again. There is no renewal, no re-sit discount and no shortened version.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How long is it valid? | 2 years from the date you pass |
| What is the deadline for? | Applying for your first learner permit in that category |
| Can I renew it? | No. You sit the test again |
| Does it expire once I have a permit? | It can, and it does not matter |
| Cost to sit again | €45 for car or motorcycle, €72 for truck or bus |
The cases where you need the theory test again
- The certificate expired before you applied for a first learner permit in that category.
- Your learner permit has been expired for 5 years or more. Until 31 October 2026 that is the line: you go back to the theory test before a new permit is issued.
- From 1 November 2026 the line moves to 2 years. Any car or motorcycle learner permit expired for 2 years or more sends you back to the theory test, whichever permit number it was.
- From 1 November 2026 you also sit the theory test again if you apply for a third or fourth permit without having taken a driving test in the previous 2 years, or if you have already held four permits.
- You want a different category. A car pass does not carry over to motorcycle, truck or bus, each needs its own theory test.
The one that catches younger drivers
You can sit the theory test before you are old enough to hold the permit it leads to. Sit the car test at 15 and you cannot get a category B permit until 17, which is more than two years away. The certificate expires in the gap and the test has to be repeated.
The same logic applies to the tractor route. If you sat the test to get a W permit and later want a car permit, check the date on the certificate before assuming it still counts.
Truck and bus have a second 2-year rule
If you pass the full truck test and want to add buses, you can sit the shorter 40-question bus module instead of the whole thing, and vice versa. That shortcut is only open for two years after the first pass. Miss the window and it is the full test again.
Where to check your own date
The pass date is printed on the certificate you were handed at the test centre. Lost it? The theory test service can confirm the result from your details, and the NDLS can see it when you apply for the permit, so a lost certificate is not the same as an expired one.

+How long is a theory test valid for in Ireland?
Two years from the date you pass. That applies to every category: car, motorcycle, truck and bus.
+Does a driving theory test expire?
The certificate does, two years after you pass. But once you have used it to get your learner permit, it expiring makes no difference to you.
+Do I need to pass my driving test within 2 years of the theory test?
No. The two years is the deadline for applying for your first learner permit, not for passing the driving test. Once the permit is issued you can take as long as you need.
+Can I renew my theory test certificate?
No. There is no renewal process. If it expires before you use it, you book and pay for the theory test again at the full price.
+How long is a learner permit valid for in Ireland?
Two years for a first or second permit. From 1 November 2026 a fourth permit is issued for one year only, and there is no fifth permit unless you have a medical restriction on file.
+I lost my theory test certificate. Has it expired?
No, losing the paper is not the same as expiring. The result is on record, and the NDLS can see your pass when you apply for the learner permit.
