Reschedule or Cancel Your Theory Test: Deadlines, Fees and Refunds

Updated 22 September 2026 · 3 min read

You can move or cancel an Irish driver theory test yourself through the Prometric booking site, and the cost depends only on how many calendar days are left. Seven or more days before the test, both are free. Closer than that, a 50% administrative fee applies, and in the last two days a cancellation refunds nothing. Calendar days count weekends and public holidays.

Rescheduling: the 7-day line

Rescheduling fees by days before the test
Request madeOutcome
7 or more calendar days beforeFree reschedule
1 to 6 calendar days beforeAdministrative fee of 50% of the test fee
On the test dayRescheduling not permitted

For a €45 car or motorcycle test the late fee is €22.50. For a €72 truck, bus or CPC case study test it is €36, and for the €84 combined truck and bus test it is €42. If your test is on a Monday, the free window closes on the Monday before, not the Friday.

Cancelling: three bands, not two

Cancellation refunds by days before the test
Request madeRefund
7 or more calendar days before100% refund
3 to 6 calendar days before50% refund
2 days before, 1 day before, or on the dayNo refund, 100% of the fee forfeited

Notice the gap between the two tables. Rescheduling stays possible at 50% right up to the day before, but cancelling for a 50% refund stops at 3 days out. If you are 2 days from a test you cannot sit, rescheduling saves half the fee; cancelling saves nothing.

How to do it

  1. Go to theorytest.ie and open "Reschedule or Cancel your Theory Test".
  2. Pick the right button for your test type: Driver Theory Test, ADI, CPC or ESDS each have their own reschedule and cancel links.
  3. You are taken to the Prometric booking site to complete the change.
  4. Choose a new date and centre, or confirm the cancellation. The bands are whole calendar days: for a Monday test, a request on the previous Monday counts as 7 days and is free, on the Tuesday it is 6 days and costs 50%.
Missing the appointment, arriving without accepted hard-copy photo ID, or booking with an address outside the Republic of Ireland all count as a no-show: the full fee is lost and there is nothing to reschedule. If you are not going to make it, move the booking before the day.

Under 15 on the test date?

From 1 November 2026 every candidate must be at least 15 on the day of the test. If you booked early and will be under 15 on the date, theorytest.ie says you can reschedule or cancel the booking; the normal deadlines above apply, so do it early.

Moving the test because you are not ready?

Find out first. A free mock in the official format (40 questions, 45 minutes, pass mark 35 for car) takes less time than the reschedule form. Score 38 or more three times in a row and you can keep the date.

Frequently asked questions

+Can I reschedule my theory test for free?

Yes, if the request is made at least 7 calendar days before the test date. From 6 days out a 50% administrative fee applies, and on the day itself rescheduling is not allowed.

+Do I get a refund if I cancel my theory test?

A full refund 7 or more calendar days before the test, a 50% refund 3 to 6 days before, and no refund 2 days before or later. Weekends and public holidays count as days.

+What happens if I miss my theory test?

The full fee is forfeited and you book again from scratch at the normal price. Rescheduling is not possible on the test day, so the last chance to save half the fee is the day before.

+Where do I reschedule the CPC case study test?

Through the same page on theorytest.ie, using the CPC reschedule or cancel buttons rather than the Driver Theory Test ones. The deadlines and the 50% rule are the same.
