What Age Can You Do Your Theory Test in Ireland?

Updated 21 August 2026 · 4 min read

The age you can sit the theory test and the age you can hold a learner permit are two different numbers, and mixing them up is the most common source of confusion. Here is both, by category, with the change coming in November 2026.

From 1 November 2026: minimum age 15 to sit the test

Currently you can sit the car/tractor (BW) or moped (AM) theory test from age 14. From 1 November 2026, you must be at least 15 on the date of your test appointment. If you have a test booked and will be under 15 on that date, you need to reschedule or cancel it. This is a change to the test, not to when you can get a permit.

Minimum age to hold a learner permit, by category

Learner permit minimum age (unchanged by the November 2026 test-age rule)
CategoryVehicleMinimum age for permit
AMMoped, light quadricycle16
A1Small motorcycle16
WTractor, work vehicle16
BCar, light van17
A2Medium motorcycle18
CTruck18 with CPC, 21 without
DBus21 with CPC, 24 without
AMotorcycle, any size20 progressive, 24 direct access

You can pass the theory test before you reach the permit age for that category, which is exactly why 14 and 15 year olds sit the tractor (W) theory test: to be ready to apply for the permit the day they turn 16. The catch is the 2-year certificate validity below.

Why sitting the test early can backfire

Your theory test certificate is only valid for 2 years from the date you pass. Sit it at 14 for a tractor permit, wait past your 16th birthday to actually apply, and the certificate can lapse before you use it. Sit it too early relative to when you plan to apply, and you pay for the test twice.

Rule of thumb: sit the theory test within a year of when you plan to apply for the matching learner permit. Any earlier and the 2-year clock risks running out before you use the certificate.

Frequently asked questions

+Can I do my theory test at 15 in Ireland?

Yes. From 1 November 2026 the minimum age to sit the BW or AM theory test is 15 (it was previously 14). You can sit it at 15, but you cannot hold most learner permits until 16 or 17 depending on category.

+Can you do your theory test at 16 in Ireland?

Yes, and for most people this is the practical age to do it, since 16 is also the minimum age for an AM, A1 or W learner permit — so you can apply for the permit almost immediately after passing.

+What is the youngest you can do your theory test?

From 1 November 2026, the minimum age is 15 for the car/tractor (BW) and moped (AM) theory tests. Before that date it is 14.

+Can I get my full driving licence at 17 in Ireland?

You can hold a category B (car) learner permit from 17, but you need the theory test, at least 6 months on a first learner permit, Essential Driver Training and a pass in the practical driving test before getting a full licence — realistically not before 17 and a half at the earliest.
