Theory Test Apps in Ireland: Official App, Free Apps and Web Practice Compared

Updated 30 August 2026 · 5 min read

There is one official Driver Theory Test learning app, sold through the App Store and Google Play in two versions (car/bike and bus/truck). Everything else, including this site, is independent study material. The honest answer to "which should I use": the one that lets you practise the real format regularly, because consistency matters more than the logo on the icon.

The official app: what you get

The official learning app is licensed by the RSA and built on the official question material, with progress tracking and practice by section. The RSA warns that some unofficial apps on the stores do not contain correct questions, and that warning is fair: app stores are full of theory test apps with outdated or invented content.

The trade-offs: it is a paid product per vehicle group, tied to the device platform you buy it on, and reviews often mention a dated interface. None of that stops it doing the job.

How to judge any practice tool in 2 minutes

Do you need an app at all?

Not any more. A modern practice website works on any phone, tablet or computer without installation, and can be pinned to your home screen like an app. This site works that way: the demo questions and a full mock exam per category are free in the browser, progress syncs across devices if you sign in, and it keeps working offline once loaded. The complete bank of 3,362 questions with explanations is €9.99/month or €19 once.

Whatever you pick, the test is passed by people who sat full timed mocks until they scored 38+ out of 40 consistently. The tool is the delivery mechanism; the mocks are the medicine.

Frequently asked questions

+Is there an official DTT app for Ireland?

Yes. The official Driver Theory Test learning app is sold on the App Store and Google Play, in separate versions for car/bike and bus/truck. It is the only app licensed by the RSA; other theory test apps on the stores are independent products of varying quality.

+Is it worth buying the theory test app?

If you prefer studying on one phone and want RSA-licensed material, yes, it does the job. If you want to study across devices, try before paying, or practise in another language, a web-based practice tool covers the same ground and usually costs less.

+Which app is best for the theory test in Ireland?

Judge by four things: real exam format (40 questions, 45 minutes, pass mark 35 for car), current post-2024 question material, explanations for wrong answers, and a free trial of real content. The official app and the better independent tools all meet these; many free apps on the stores do not.

+Are free theory test apps safe to use?

Some are fine, many are outdated. The risk is not safety but studying wrong material: the RSA has warned about unofficial apps with incorrect questions. Check when the app was last updated and whether it mentions the 2024 question bank before trusting it.
