Theory Test Book Ireland: Which One, What It Costs, Where to Buy

The official theory test book in Ireland is "The Official Driver Theory Test Questions and Answers". It costs €21.99 and comes in two editions, both dated May 2024: one for motorcycles, cars and work vehicles (categories A and B), and one for trucks and buses that also covers Step 1 and Step 2 of the Driver CPC. Prometric, the company that runs the test for the RSA, is the only supplier of official revision material. Everything else on the market is unofficial, including this site.

Truck and bus candidates are also pointed at the RSA Rules of the Road book and the official guides to driving buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles. The car and motorcycle book is the one most people mean when they search for "the theory test book".
Is the 2024 edition still the current one?
Yes. The question bank was last revised in 2024, when the RSA replaced images and updated questions on road safety and legislation. The number of questions did not change: car and motorcycle tests still have 40 questions with 35 to pass, truck and bus tests 100 questions with 74 to pass. The May 2024 edition is the one on sale in September 2026, and the official store lists no newer edition.

The download software runs only on Windows (there is no Mac version), so if you study on a phone or a Mac the choice is the book, the portal or the app. The real test is sat on a computer screen, which is an argument for practising on a screen rather than only from paper.

Do you need the book at all?
Plenty of people pass without it. The book is good for reading through a topic on the bus, and it is the cheapest one-off way to see the official wording. What it cannot do is time you, shuffle the questions, or tell you which topic keeps tripping you up. A timed mock in the official format does that, and you can sit one here for free before deciding whether €21.99 is worth it to you.

+Is there a free PDF of the theory test book?
Not an official one. Prometric sells the book, the download software, the online portal and the app; it does not give the question bank away. Sites offering a free "official" PDF are not licensed. Free practice questions in the official format are available on this site without signup.

The truck and bus edition, titled Questions and Answers: Truck and Bus (including Step 1 and Step 2 of Driver CPC). The car and motorcycle edition does not include CPC material.
+Can I buy the theory test book from outside Ireland?
The Prometric store dispatches orders within the Republic of Ireland only. If you are abroad, the online portal subscription (€23 for one week up to €41 for six months) needs no delivery.
+Is the theory test book enough to pass?
For many people, yes, if they read it properly and check themselves afterwards. The test is multiple choice on a computer with a clock, so finish with a few timed mock exams in the official format to make sure the knowledge holds up under time pressure.
