Question 1072 · Truck theory test
When should a lifting axle be used?
Pick an answer to test yourself.
Correct answer
To save fuel when carrying a lighter load.
Official explanation
Rigid lorries, tractor units and trailers are often fitted with lifting axles. These axles may be free running or steered. The advantage of a lifting axle is that it can be raised or lowered to suit the load on the vehicle, thereby saving fuel and tyre wear.
