Question 404 · Car theory test
During a weekly check, a driver notices a badly worn front tyre. What should the driver do?
Pick an answer to test yourself.
Correct answer
Have the worn tyre replaced.
Official explanation
The tyres are the vehicle's only contact with the road. The area of contact is small, and if worn, they will not grip properly and safely. The quality of the tyres on a vehicle is an important factor in the vehicle's road holding and braking ability. Drivers should check their tyres regularly, and if they notice that a tyre is badly worn, they should replace it immediately. Whilst the minimum legal tread depth for tyres on most vehicles is 1.6 mm (1 mm for motorcycles), drivers should replace a tyre before it becomes this worn.
