Passed the Theory Test? Here Is What Happens Next in Ireland
Updated 24 September 2026 · 5 min read
Passing the theory test feels like the finish line. It is actually the starting gun. Your certificate has a shelf life, and the road from here to a full Irish licence has a fixed sequence. Here is the whole path, in order.
Your certificate is valid for exactly 2 years
The Driver Theory Test certificate is valid for 2 years from the day you pass. If you do not apply for your first learner permit within that window, the certificate expires and you must sit (and pay for) the theory test again. Do not sit on it: apply for the permit within weeks, not months.
Step 1: Apply for your first learner permit (NDLS)
- Apply online at ndls.ie (with a verified MyGovID) or book an NDLS centre appointment.
- You will need your theory test certificate, photo ID, PPSN and proof of residency/address.
- You must normally be resident in Ireland at least 185 days a year.
- A completed NDLS eyesight report form, dated within one month, is required with every first learner permit application. A registered optometrist or medical practitioner fills it in.
Step 2: EDT, 12 mandatory lessons (car)
First-time category B learners must complete Essential Driver Training: 12 one-hour lessons with an RSA-approved instructor (ADI), recorded in your logbook. You also must be accompanied by a qualified driver whenever you drive, display L-plates, and stay off motorways.
Step 3: Six months on, book the driving test
You must hold your first learner permit for at least 6 months before sitting the practical driving test. Waiting lists move, so book earlier than you think you should. The test itself covers technical checks, independent driving and manoeuvres, and is booked through the RSA.
Motorcycles: IBT instead of EDT
Category A learners complete Initial Basic Training (IBT), a 16-hour modular course, before riding unaccompanied on the road. The rest of the path (permit, then practical test) mirrors the car route.

+How long is the theory test certificate valid in Ireland?
Two years from the date you pass. If you do not obtain your first learner permit within that time, you must retake the theory test.
+Can I drive alone with a learner permit?
No. Learner drivers must always be accompanied by a driver who has held a full licence in that category for at least 2 years, must display L-plates, and must not drive on motorways.
+How soon after the theory test can I take the driving test?
You must hold your first learner permit for at least 6 months before taking the practical driving test, and category B first-timers must complete the 12 EDT lessons.
+What documents do I need for my first learner permit?
Your theory test certificate, photo ID, PPS number, proof of address/residency and a completed NDLS eyesight report form dated within one month. Apply online at ndls.ie or at an NDLS centre.
+Do I have to redo my theory test if my permit expires?
Until 31 October 2026, yes if your learner permit has been expired for 5 years or more. From 1 November 2026 the limit drops to 2 years for any car or motorcycle permit, whichever permit number it was. From the same date you also retake the theory test if you apply for a third or fourth permit without having taken a driving test in the previous 2 years.
