Question 1374 · Truck theory test
What is the purpose of a ‘range-change’ gearbox?
Pick an answer to test yourself.
Correct answer
It offers the driver a selection of high and low gears to suit the load being carried or the terrain.
Official explanation
A range-change gearbox offers a wider range of gears than a standard gearbox. By offering the choice of high or low ratios, it effectively doubles the number of gears available, so that the driver can choose the most appropriate gear for the road and the load being carried.
