Official explanation
Stopping distance is the sum of reaction distance and braking distance. Reaction time is the time it takes to perceive the hazard and perform a reaction to that hazard. For example, apply the brake. Reaction time can be negatively affected by age, alcohol, drugs, fatigue, state of health and mental condition.
