Question 3039 · Motorcycle theory test
How would a motorcyclist know if there was black ice on the road?
Pick an answer to test yourself.
Correct answer
Tyre noise will decrease.
Official explanation
Black ice can be virtually invisible or look like a sheet of water, and so presents a particular hazard for motorcyclists. In wintry conditions, if a noticed reduction in tyre noise or if the steering becomes lighter, motorcyclists should suspect that there may be black ice on the road. They should adjust to the conditions by slowing down, allowing up to ten times the normal stopping distance and ensuring all controls are operated smoothly and gently. If necessary consider a safer mode of transport.
