Question 3040 · Motorcycle theory test
When motorcycling, when should the rear brake of a motorcycle be used on its own?
Pick an answer to test yourself.
Correct answer
During slow manoeuvres.
Official explanation
Under normal circumstances, motorcyclists should apply the front brake just before the rear brake. The front brake is considerably more powerful than the rear. However when travelling at very slow speeds or performing slow manoeuvres, using the rear brake alone can result in smoother control and improved stability. Many modern motorcycles have linked braking systems which can mean that when one lever is pressed it operates both brakes. Motorcyclists should use the vehicle’s handbook to familiarise themselves with the safe operation of the vehicle controls.
